Jiří Trnka’s interest in puppets dates from his childhood. Josef Skupa recognized his talent and supported him. In 1935, Trnka graduated from the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague. During his studies Trnka worked with Skupa designing puppets for his theatre. Jiří Trnka, preeminent filmmaker of the Czech puppet animation tradition who was also a painter, designer, cartoonist, and book illustrator. Trnka, who was trained as a painter in art school, won a design competition organized by the Czech puppeteer Josef Skupa in 1921. The touring retrospective The Puppet Master: The Films of Jiří Trnka is produced by Comeback Company, originated at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.

From 1938 to 1945, Trnka divided his energies between many different jobs, including toymaking and the organization of more exhibitions. The scene design job for Libuse was assigned in 1939, after a national public competition, that Trnka won.
