This exploratory course in the SOLO Taxonomy will better equip you to find, classify and act upon signals of learning growth. fully, SOLO taxonomy is able to address many of the downfalls of Bloom’s Taxonomy and provides a more flexible and consistent framework for both scaffolding towards and assessment of learning outcomes. SOLO taxonomy is structured as a five-level framework with each level representing a more mature level of learning outcome than the previous. SOLO Taxonomy in Music Education supports specialist and non-specialist practitioners who want to improve their practice by using SOLO in the music classroom.

Included are numerous examples, rubrics, templates and other resources designed to help make SOLO Taxonomy an indispensable part of your planning and classroom practice. SOLO Taxonomy (Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes) provides a model for different levels of understanding, including surface, deep and conceptual (Biggs and Collis 1982). SOLO Taxonomy supports teachers to classify learning outcomes in terms of their complexity, enabling A short history of the SOLO Taxonomy Developed in the early 1980 ’s by Biggs & Collis in Australia, these researchers looking at trying to describe a hierarchical sequence of ‘ learning’ among undergraduate students.

It was proposed by academics Biggs and Collis (1982) after classifying student’s thinking across a range of ages and a range of subjects. SOLO Taxonomy (structure of observed learning outcomes) provides a simple, reliable and robust model for three levels of understanding – surface deep and conceptual (Biggs and Collis 1982). At the prestructurallevel of understanding, the task is inappropriately attacked, and the student has missed the point or needs help to start. It’s all about increasing the levels of complexity in tasks as pupils move through their learning.

The SOLO Taxonomy has been around since I graduated from eighth grade. In spite of that, I never learned about John Biggs and Kevin Collis’ creation in 1982. SOLO Taxonomy: At Rolleston College, SOLO Taxonomy is used as our tool for Assessment for Learning. This is how we measure the level of a learner’s understanding, thinking and/or skills, and is how we help them identify their next steps in learning. SOLO stands for “Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes”.
